Mae Hong Son is a delightful road journey North West from Pai through another 800 plus curves, heading towards the Burmese border. With a very different feel to it than Pai and much smaller than Chang Mai, Mae Hong Son is a unique destination in Northern Thailand that attracts a very different type of backpacker; those who are willing to hunt around a bit and explore rather than having everything so easily to hand. The town a lot less catered for travellers in respect of bars, restaurants and resorts.
The natural beauty all around the town with its virgin rain forests are truly impressive and there are many nearby places to visit and explore where you will feel right in the heart of the real Thai countryside. It’s breathtaking.
The province itself has become famous for its Hill tribe people. Many travellers visit this area to see the Karen hill tribe and buy their handicrafts. You see many signs along the lanes inviting home stays and where you can live with families, work with them and learn their crafts. Some travellers are so touched by the people that they choose to live here for long periods, taking on project with Hill Tribe Trusts, helping them with clean water, improved living conditions and schooling. Out in the wild up here, there is a sense of isolation in this part of Northern Thailand that is remarkable. Everything is on a large scale; the mountains and rivers seem to go on infinitum.
